27 Ivor New Town Rd [No Longer Considered a Match]

In 1861 William Williams lived with his family at 27 Ivor New Town Rd (now Barrack Row Rd). These homes, then owned by the Dowlais Iron Company, were originally Barracks for soldiers who were to keep an eye on the town after the Merthyr Uprising in 1831. This area is known as Penywern, and overlooked the iron works.

William's neighbors, in 1861, were the families of William Davies to the right and Rees Lewis to the left. It is likely that after a hard day of toiling away as an iron miner, William may have frequented the Ivor Arms or Fish Pond & Castle pubs that were at the end of the street.

Thomas Williams (1848) [No Longer Considered a Match]

In 1871, Thomas may have been a Butcher's assistant to George Healy who lived at 176 High Street in Dowlais.

Roderick Williams (1853) [No Longer Considered a Match]

Roderick Williams (7 Jun 1853) was born to William Williams and Mary Griffiths in Dowlais, Glamorganshire.

In 1881, Roderick was living with wife Mary and children Mary Ann and David at 12 White Street in "the Cwm." Roderick, like many in his family, was a coal miner. Roderick and family apparently moved to Ystradyfodwg and added a Esther and Thomas to the family, but their son David likely had died. Roderick may have died in Pontypridd in the first quarter of 1911. A Roderick of 37 Hendrefadwg Terrace, Tylorstown died on 3 Feb 1911 and left his wife Mary his estate worth 810 pounds.

Edward Williams (1845) [No Longer Considered a Match]

Edward Williams (c1845) was born in Dowlais, Glamorganshire to William Williams and Mary Griffiths, both of Cardiganshire.

Edward was the witness to his father's death, while living with his parents at 42 Broad Street. In 1881, Edward was still single and living with his widowed mother at the same address. His occupation was listed as a coal miner.

In 1891, there was an Edward who was a coal miner from Dowlais married to a Mary from Tregaron, his ancestral hometown living at 15 Odessa Street, which was the street just above Broad Street in Dowlais. Given his wife's birthplace and the close proximity to where his parents lived, I believe this to be the same Edward Williams. It is possible that Edward waited to get married to Mary until after his mother died in November 1887. According to the census, Edward only spoke Welsh, but his wife spoke both Welsh and English.

Given that Edward has not yet been found in the census records following 1891, it is possible that he is the Edward Williams that died in the first quarter of 1901 in Merthyr Tydfil.

It is possible that Edward married Mary Thomas, daughter of John Lloyd Thomas, who lived at 14 Church Street in Merthyr Tydfil in 1881. Mary was listed as a Grocer and Tea Dealer, and Edward's mother was working as a green grocer in 1881. Mary Thomas was also born in Tregaron in 1849 like Edward's spouse as entered in the 1891 census. The BMD records show that both an Edward Williams and Mary Thomas did get married in the last quarter of 1883 in Merthyr Tydfil. That said, the Thomas family lived a couple of miles away in Lower Merthyr Tydfil
